Flooring Product Guidance
Use the red-to-green product guidance below to select safer product types by avoiding those in red and preferring yellow and green, which are safer for occupants, fenceline communities, and workers.
When choosing flooring materials:
- Prefer flooring based on biological materials or minerals that does not need to be sealed after installation. Good options include wood, cork, sheep's wool carpet, linoleum sheet or tile, some ceramic tiles, portland cement terrazzo, and polished concrete.
- Reduce or avoid the use of flooring that is largely plastic. These product types include standard carpet, vinyl, rubber, PVC-free resilient, epoxy terrazzo, and bio-based fluid-applied flooring (sometimes referred to as “liquid linoleum”).
- If stain repellants and/or sealers are required, avoid fluorinated (PFAS-based) products.
- Critically evaluate recycling claims.
- Avoid products marketed as antimicrobial and claiming or implying a health benefit.
- Prefer products with a CDPH emission certification, but don’t rely on this information alone.
