Waterproofing & Dampproofing Product Guidance
Use the red-to-green product guidance below to select safer product types by avoiding those in red and preferring yellow and green, which are safer for occupants, fenceline communities, and workers.
When choosing waterproofing and dampproofing materials:
- Prefer bentonite sheet waterproofing for applications where it is appropriate.
- If bentonite sheet waterproofing cannot be used, prefer crystalline waterproofing or non-PVC thermoplastic sheet waterproofing.
- If asphalt-based products must be used, prefer cold-applied asphalt emulsions over solvent-based products, self-adhering rubberized asphalt sheet waterproofing, and hot-applied asphalt waterproofing.
- Avoid products reacted on-site, like PMMA and polyurethane waterproofing.
- Pay attention to accessory products. When fully-adhered products are needed, prefer self-adhering products that use a mechanical bond or those with non-bituminous/non-asphaltic adhesives.
